PCS Students Visit Disney World

Presbyterian Christian School (PCS) students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Disney’s Imagination Campus in Orlando, Florida, from January 16-20. As part of the school’s educational program, the group participated in the exciting Technology in the Parks program at Disney World, exploring cutting-edge technologies used to create the magic behind Disney theme park attractions. Students learned how Disney stories are central to everything in Disney Parks—and that to tell those stories through attractions, themed-lands and delightful experiences, innovative technology is needed.

The trip began with a memorable “behind-the-scenes” technology tour at Epcot on Friday, January 19. Rhonda Robertson, the DC Chemistry and AP Physics teacher at PCS, shared insights into the tour, saying, “We participated in a behind-the-scenes technology tour in Epcot. During this 2 ½ hr tour, students learned how the design process for a new attraction works, from conception to completion, and even through to maintenance.” Robertson explained that, “[Disney] tour guides led us through descriptions of how technology engages all our senses on rides such as Soarin’, and how trackless technology works on newer ride designs such as Ratatouille. We even visited the maintenance bay of Ratatouille to observe how the ride is monitored for problems and how the repair process is streamlined.”

The program showcased how advanced technology plays a critical role in creating immersive experiences for guests, from ride design to maintenance. Students were able to understand how innovative technologies like motion-sensing and projection mapping come together to create breathtaking rides. The weekend took a lighter turn with “fun” days at Disney’s four iconic theme parks, where students had the opportunity to bond and experience the attractions first-hand.Reflecting on the experience, Robertson added, “It was interesting to see how the technology described on Soarin’ and Ratatouille was now obvious in other rides and experiences.” The trip was an invaluable experience for PCS students, who not only had fun but also gained an appreciation for the role of technology in storytelling and the importance of collaboration in bringing creative ideas to life. Junior, Porter Vance, shared,  “The highlight of our Disney World trip was our visit to Epcot, where we got a chance to go behind the scenes. It was cool to see how the motorized characters operated and how they connected to STEM technology. I found it fascinating to learn about the role of STEM in creating the rides and attractions throughout the park.“ Julianne Jordan, Class of 2026, also shared, “During our visit to Disney World, we got the chance to see a preview of The American Adventure show featuring animatronics before it opened to everyone that day. It was awesome to be in a quiet theater with just our PCS group, watching how all the elements came together and functioned!”
