Recently, Mr. Charlie Bradley, Superintendent at Codaray Construction, visited Mrs. Messer’s Mississippi Studies classes to show students how classroom lessons apply directly to real-world engineering and construction.

While studying the geography of Mississippi and examining the state’s distinct soil regions, students learned how ground conditions impact structural stability. Mr. Bradley explained that engineers often require blending different soils to ensure a firm, reliable base before construction begins.

Using the school’s new multipurpose building as a real-world example, he shared that while topsoil and upper layers were suitable, deeper excavation revealed clay. To properly prepare the ground for the parking lot, the engineering team had to source alternative soil. Mr. Bradley detailed the step-by-step process of visiting dirt pits, testing various soil samples, and selecting the precise mix required to secure the project’s foundation.

Connecting the physical lesson to a spiritual truth, Mr. Bradley tied the necessity of solid ground to the parable in Matthew 7 about building a house on a rock rather than sand. He reminded students that Jesus is our Firm Foundation—when storms, rain, and winds come, the house stands firm because it is anchored in Christ.
