Presbyterian Christian School (PCS) is thrilled to announce the hiring of Richard Chambliss as its next head football coach. This marks an exciting chapter for PCS athletics as the school prepares to transition from MAIS to MHSAA 3A Region 8. Coach Chambliss’s extensive experience in the MHSAA will be a great resource for our football program and our athletic department.
A Hattiesburg native, Coach Chambliss brings a wealth of knowledge and success to PCS. He joins us from Columbia High School, where he served as offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. During his tenure, Coach Chambliss helped the Wildcats achieve an impressive 31 wins, including a state runner-up finish in 2023. Under his leadership, the Wildcats set a school record for points scored in a season and scored 34 or more points in 11 games. Beyond his on-field contributions, Coach Chambliss also managed fundraising, ticket sales, and college recruiting for the program.
Coach Chip Bilderback, under whom Coach Chambliss served for two years at Columbia High School, praised his abilities and character: “I am excited for PCS on their choice of Richard Chambliss as the next head football coach. Most importantly, Coach Chambliss is a high-character person that all parents will be excited to have their son play for. I have had the privilege of working with Coach Chambliss at Perry Central and Columbia High School, and he was instrumental in the success we had in those programs. Richard is smart, organized, and has one of the brightest offensive minds I have coached with. But I know his ability to motivate and lead young men will make him an outstanding head coach.”
Before his time at Columbia, Coach Chambliss spent four seasons at Jones County Junior College, where he served as tight ends coach, special teams coordinator, and recruiting coordinator under Coach Steve Buckley. During his tenure, the team won three South Division championships and achieved a state runner-up finish. His special teams unit led the nation in blocked punts, and he played a significant role in football operations and managing the program’s social media presence.
Steve Buckley, former head football coach at Jones County Junior College, added: “Great hire for PCS! They are getting an incredibly gifted person in so many areas. Richard has prepared to be a head coach for a long time and the players and faculty at PCS will love having Richard on their team! Richard brings football knowledge from many levels but more importantly he will develop young men beyond the football field.”
Coach Chambliss also served as offensive coordinator at Perry Central, where he helped the team secure its first playoff appearance in six years and its first 10-win season in over a decade. While attending the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), he gained valuable experience as a student assistant, working on both sides of the ball.
“We are honored to welcome Coach Chambliss and his family to Team PCS,” said PCS Head of School Jimmy Messer. “His leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence align with our school’s mission. We are confident he will make a lasting impact on our football program and the lives of our student-athletes.”
Drew Mattison, PCS Athletic Director, shared: “We are excited to welcome Coach Chambliss and his family to PCS. He checks all the boxes of what we were looking for in our next head coach. I am personally looking forward to seeing our football program grow under his leadership.”
Coach Chambliss is married to Sammi (Ritter) Chambliss, and they are proud parents of two children, son Grady (3) and daughter Campbell (5 weeks). The Chambliss family is excited to join the PCS community.
