The PCS Discovery Lab: Where education meets exploration

December 10, 2024

In a time when play-based learning is increasingly rare, Presbyterian Christian School is committed to reversing this trend. Through the innovative Discovery Lab, we provide students with the opportunity to reach their full potential by blending hands-on exploration with purposeful learning. Designed specifically for kindergarteners, the Discovery Lab offers weekly themed centers that tie directly to classroom units, creating unique and engaging experiences for young learners.

A 2021 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that nearly 60% of kindergarten teachers report children today spend less time engaging in play-based learning than they did a decade ago. At PCS, we are determined to change that.

“The Discovery Lab is a dedicated space where students can explore, learn, and play with peers from different classes,” says Jamie Rix, Discovery Lab Coordinator. “Kindergarteners thrive through play, and the lab allows them to use their imagination and creativity, develop cooperative skills, and reinforce what they’re learning in the classroom. It also focuses on fine motor skills that are essential for tasks like writing.”

The Discovery Lab has explored captivating themes such as insects, habitats, germs, nutrition, the ocean, and so much more! These experiences not only spark joy and curiosity but also deepen understanding of classroom concepts.

Research underscores the importance of play-based learning for children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. For example, in Finland—where play is central to early education—students consistently perform well in global education rankings. Finnish children spend significantly more time engaging in unstructured play compared to their peers in the U.S., and the benefits are evident.

Similarly, a study published in the Journal of Early Childhood Research found that children in play-based kindergarten programs showed greater long-term academic success and social skills by third grade compared to those in academically intensive programs.

“It’s essential for kindergarteners to experience diverse learning opportunities,” says Rix. “Kindergarten lays the foundation for their educational journey, and these early experiences help build the skills they’ll need for future success.”

At Presbyterian Christian School, we believe the Discovery Lab is a vital part of our mission to foster academic and social growth. By equipping students with the tools to explore, create, and collaborate, PCS is shaping confident, curious learners who are ready to thrive in school and beyond.
